HEALTHY TUCKSHOP DAY

Australia’s very first Healthy Tuckshop Day was held on Wednesday 14th June 2017. The day was a great success with over 150 schools nationwide signing the pledge and making the commitment to building and sustaining healthy tuckshops.

The Tuckshop Revolution team held a launch event at St Joseph’s Primary School, where we were joined by Julia, from My School Connect and the Tuckshop Revolution’s Ambassador and former Masterchef contestant, Renea Smith. Renea kicked off the day with a cooking demonstration creating some easy homemade sushi. The students were blown away by how easy it can be to make healthy sushi at home, with fresh and delicious ingredients. We would like to thank the Principal, staff at St Joseph’s Primary School and Jo Crowley from Wellbeing Canteen for hosting Australia’s first Healthy Tuckshop Day launch event!

The day received huge support from the community, including some great media coverage with an article in the Herald Sun, a chat with Kyle and Jackie O on KIIS FM and an interview with The Grant Goldman Breakfast Show 2SM, plus lots of great local media coverage as well.

We’ve heard wonderful stories at had great feedback from participating schools. It’s testimonials like the ones below that make us feel like we’ve actually helped to make a difference:

“Healthy Tuckshop Day was a great success. I was a total sell out at recess of all over the counter healthy choices. It was great to see some of the students that have only ever brought pies and sausage rolls buy some home cooked food and love it. It was great to get so much excellent feedback and see the smiles on their faces.”Kim’s Lunch Box, Peak Hill Primary School.

“We are a small school which opened only last year in Port Augusta, South Australia. At the moment we have less than 50 students and steadily growing. At this stage we don’t have a permanent tuckshop, however we were so inspired by the concept of a Healthy Tuckshop Day that we decided to join in the fun on June 14th by creating a Pop-Up Tuckshop. The event was a great success, our students were brave in trying new foods and many were surprised by things they like. Parents got on board by helping prepare food and joining us for lunch on the day. We also sent home info packs containing fact sheets about healthy eating, the effects of sugar in children, and lunch ideas and recipes.

Our Pop-Up Healthy Tuckshop was a fantastic platform for our school to celebrate healthy eating habits. Thank you for the great initiative!” – Seaview Primary School

At Wyoming Public School we had a kitchen full of busy volunteers providing a fruit/ veg platter for every classroom to give the children a chance to try some new treats whilst using the experience to help educate the students on healthier choices in their diets.

We would like to thank all of our wonderful Tuckshop Revolution brand partners for helping us the spread the word about Healthy Tuckshop Day. We would also like to thank everyone who helped to make our very first Healthy Tuckshop Day a huge success, we can’t wait for next year! You can sign up to be involved again next year below.
